I wanted to share another Mother’s Day Gift idea that is inexpensive and simple to do. I am really into succulents lately as you can see by my Inexpensive Mothers Day Present post and my Vertical Succulent Gardening post. They are so easy to grow and I love the varieties available. The project I’m sharing today is a Succulent Book Planter. I saw it first on Pinterest here and thought it was a unique idea.
To begin gather your supplies.
An old book
A utility knife
Mod Podge/ brush
Ruler
Pencil
Variety of Succulents
After you gather your supplies you need to draw a rectangle with your ruler and pencil. I left about a 1 1/4″ border. Start cutting. This step takes a while and you need to go almost through the whole book so that it is deep enough for the roots.
Keep cutting. It’s not deep enough yet.
Once you are done cutting, add a generous layer of mod podge to the inside of the area you cut.
Add your soil and plants. You end up with something that looks like this:
I sat mine outside on my covered porch by the front door.
I bet your mother doesn’t have one of those. Happy planting!
UPDATE:
My daughter Carissa made a succulent book when she was home for Mother’s Day. Here’s hers:

Thanks Jen for the invitation to do the Mothers Day post. Did you see my succulent window post?? I'm falling in love more and more each time I walk by it.
Thanks Kaysi!!! I appreciate your comment.
Lorrie,At Home Depot and Lowes inside they sell several succulents for 2.86 a piece. I can't use those because I live in Northern MI and they would frost outside plus I don't think they are a good value for the price. In the garden centers outside you can now buy quarts of Hens and Chicks as well as Sedum (there is many different varieties of Sedum) In my planter the big star looking plant is a Hen and Chick and I used two types of sedum. Do you have a Free Cycle in your area? If so, these are very common plants and if you asked for them, I'm sure you could get some free.
