Why Respect Feels Like a Struggle When You’re Hurt

July 25, 2025

Let’s just be honest:
It’s hard to show respect when you feel unseen, misunderstood, or emotionally hurt.

It’s hard when you’re the one making the effort.
Hard when your needs go unspoken—or worse, unheard.
Hard when love feels distant and you’re left wondering,

“Why should I respect someone who isn’t loving me well right now?”

You love God. You want to honor your marriage. But you’re struggling to reconcile what you feel with what you know the Bible says.

You’re not alone in that tension.
And you’re not a bad wife for wrestling with it.

The Truth We Don’t Talk About Enough

“And the wife must respect her husband.” —Ephesians 5:33b AMP

God didn’t add conditions to that verse.
He didn’t say “if he’s acting worthy of it” or “if he checks all your boxes that week.”

But… He also didn’t say it to shame you or make you feel stuck.

He said it because respect isn’t a reward for perfection—it’s a seed of faith.

It’s something you plant even when you don’t see fruit yet.

Here’s What Respect Looks Like (When It’s Hard)

1. Separate His Identity From His Behavior

Just like you’re more than your bad days—so is he.
Respect doesn’t mean ignoring hurtful behavior.
It means choosing to see who God says he is, even when his actions don’t reflect it yet.

“God, help me see him through Your eyes—not just my pain.”

2. Respect Doesn’t Mean Silence

You can disagree and still be respectful.
You can express your needs, frustrations, and hurts without dishonoring him.
Respect can sound like:

“I want to talk through this because I care about us.”
“That really hurt me, and I want to understand each other better.”

Respect is truth wrapped in gentleness. Not avoidance.

3. Let God Heal the Hurt—So You’re Not Reacting From It

Sometimes, we withhold respect not because we’re bitter…
But because we’re bleeding.
Let Jesus tend to those heart wounds.
Respect becomes possible when your source is Him—not your spouse.

  • What does respect look like when I feel disappointed?

  • Am I reacting to my husband’s behavior or responding from my identity in Christ?

  • What do I need to take to God first before bringing it to my marriage?

Friend, I know this is not easy.

You’re not being asked to perform.
You’re being invited to trust—
That God can work through your heart… even when his heart feels far.

You’re not weak for choosing respect.
You’re brave. You’re wise. You’re planting seeds that heaven will water.

And one day?
The fruit of those seeds may just surprise you.

💛 Stay faithful, even when it’s hard. God sees every bit of it.

Ready to move from “stuck” to “seen”?
