DIY House Number Sign Tutorial

Second Chance to Dream: House Number Sign

We have a very boring entrance to our driveway.

My hubby and I have wanted to do something to spruce it up but just didn’t know what to do. I came across an idea on Pinterest and knew it was the perfect structure piece for us.  You can see my inspiration sign here.

Hubby was in complete agreement with me and we headed off to  the hardware store.  We found a great deal on our lumber.  For some reason these bundles were in the clearance section and we got them for 8.00 each, normally 36.00 each. Score!

Supplies needed for this project:
2 -4 x 4  cedar boards
5 -1 x 6 treated boards
liquid nails
nail gun
house numbers
 5 ft. of chain
4 eyebolts
2 caps for the 4 x 4 boards
paint or stain
 bag of cement
First thing you need to do is lay out your 2 4 x 4 boards.
Next hubby made the window box.  Our measurements were as follows:
Base 41″ long
2 Sides 54″ long
2 End pieces 5 1/2 ” long
He used liquid nails as well as a nail gun to assemble the box.
We then laid everything out to get the window box at the height we wanted it to be at.
For the top piece of wood, hubby took a 1×6 and ripped it in half and cut it to 54″ long.  You will need both for the sign.  Only one shows in this picture..
We had some wainscoting left over from our banquette seating project so he cut it into a 20 x 20 square.  He ripped a 1 x 6 into 2′ strips to make a frame for the square.  He assembled it all together.
After everything was painted we took it to the driveway entrance. He dug holes and sat them in the holes.
He then made sure everything was level.
He mixed up the cement and poured it in.
Next, he added the sign.  He used 14″ of chain and an eye bolt for all four corners.  I was not a huge fan of the look of the bottom chain on the structure but once the flowers were added you can’t really see it.  It will keep it swinging in the wind.
Plant your flowers and enjoy pulling into your driveway.
Don’t you think it looks so much better?  It will look even better after the flowers grow some.  It was surprisingly quick to put together and around 75.00 to make.
Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful Memorial weekend.

Beautiful! That sure spruces up the area there. Not that it needed sprucing. You live in such a lush, lovely area.

I really love your sign - and so easy for people to find you. This is the perfect opportunity for me to ask a question that has been bugging me for years. I live in Australia and we do not have house numbers anywhere near as high as you have in the USA. For instance, my house number is 37 and the highest in my street is 41. This is just a typical street in Australia. I have to wonder if you have streets that are miles long?! Can you enlighten me please? Thanks in advance.

Hi! I loved this project so much that I am in the middle of doing it right now! I just want to mention that on your list of supplies you should add 4 more eyebolts for the address sign. I only bought 4 and will have to go back and get 4 more. Also, I decided to stain mine and just paint the accents. Thanks for your inspiration! We care take our property and I can't wait for our landlords and vacation renters to see it!
