Before we get started on our lesson I am a Member of Christ’s body I want to quickly review the lessons that we have already done.
We’ve done:
These all fall under the heading of I am accepted. For your life work this week I want you to write down next to each of those truths how they help you know you are accepted.
OK, let’s dig in.
The body of Christ is the Church, made up of all those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior. Each Christian is a part of the body of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:27 now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it
Eph. 4: 11, 12 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
1 Cor. 12:4,5 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
The body of Christ, like a body, is made up of many parts. There are toes, fingers, organs, etc. When left alone they are useless but when put together they make up the body of Christ. We all play a part.
We learned from Kori, last year that the body of Christ is one of the ways God speaks to us.
The body of Christ is also a spiritual weapon.
God uses the body to help us fight those weary battles. We NEED the body of Christ and satan knows that and will very often pull us off into isolation. Check your life for isolation because it slips in very slowly! Also be aware that satan will tempt us when we are hungry, tired and isolated. When Jesus was in the wilderness these where the three areas satan tempted him in. Isolation is definitely satans goal.
Jam. 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
Eph. 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
I got to experience firsthand recently how God designed the body of Christ to operate. On March 9, 2014 I received a phone call no mother wants. My son had been in a snowmobile accident and he had been airflighted to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. They have him intubated and he’s in stable condition.
Aiflight/intubated & stable don’t go in the same sentence in my mind. That was a long 3.5 hour drive. On the way down I texted everyone I knew that would pray and asked for prayers. The hardest part of the ride down is I had no idea what I was going to find when I walked into that hospital room
The body of Christ went into action:
- I texted my family and any friend I knew who would pray and he was put on MANY, MANY prayer lists.
- My friend Mary got my boys and our dog and kept my boys for a good portion of the month I was away.
- The day of the accident people came to the hospital bringing food and snacks.
- People brought my boys to and from Traverse City to Kalamazoo
- Some of my friend went into my home and brought me down some clothes.
- People offered up their home for us to stay
- People visited with us and took up the time that seemed to drag.
- We had various pastors come to the hospital to pray with us/for Drew.
- I got texts and emails from several women daily sharing a scripture, telling me they were praying for us.
- We got many notes and cards- several from out childhood churches.
This is just a short synopsis of how the body of Christ came around us.
We started a Facebook page called the Daily Drew that we updated daily and the encouragement and prayers and support that we received was amazing. Not only did we get to witness a miracle but all those around us witnessed that miracle as well. There was an incredible out pouring of love and support shown to us.
Gal. 6:2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
I had this picture that each prayer and good deed was a piece of a patchwork quilt. All of them put together made a stunning quilt.
The prayer and the peace we felt was incredible.
We all have a story! We all have a way we can build up the body of Christ. Let’s use our wounding’s and take what we have learned and share it and help build others up.
2 Cor. 1:4 who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
- Do you know what your gifts are in the body of Christ? Do you feel like you are using your gifts? Are you finding that you are isolating yourself? Pray and ask God if there is anything he’d like you to work on.
